Alma Grove
Alma Grove is located between Balaclava road and Reverdy road. It joins Southwark road to Lynton road.
The Alma is a small river in Crimea that flows into the Black Sea. Its mouth is halfway between Yevpatoria and Sevastopol.
Near the Alma river the allied British, French, and Ottoman armies defeated the Russian army which was under the command of Prince Aleksandr Sergeevich Menshikov (supreme commander of the Russian land and sea forces in crimea) on 20 September 1854 (Battle of the Alma).
The battle cost the French 1,600 casualties, the British 2,000, and the Russians some 5,000. The battle was commemorated in Paris by the naming of the Pont de l'Alma.
