Crimean Expedition Monument

The monument of Luigi Belli, erected in 1892, celebrates the expedition of the military corps which, between 1855 and 1856, under the command of General Alfonso La Marmora, took part in the Crimean war against the Russian Empire alongside France , England and the Ottoman Empire .

The monument was inaugurated on the evening of June 1, 1892, in the presence of King Umberto I (1844-1900) and the authorities.

The sculptor Luigi Belli (1844-1919), had first studied decorative architecture in Paris with the architect Torrier. In Turin, he became the student of Vincenzo Vela and Odoardo Tabacchi, professors of sculpture at the Albertina Academy. He also became a professor of ornamental plastic at the same Academy in 1885, where he held teaching positions until 1916.

The intention of the Society of Veterans, founded in 1878 in Turin, Milan and Genoa, was to celebrate the event which brought the kingdom of Sardinia to the forefront of the international political context through its protagonists: Prime Minister Cavour (1810 -1861), who had allied with France and England to defend the integrity of the Ottoman Empire against the Russian expansionist objectives, King Victor Emmanuel II (1820-1878) who had advocated the conflict and especially the general Alfonso Lamarmora (1804-1878), head of the expeditionary force.

The Corps of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia was a force of 18,058 men (1,038 officers and employees and 17,020 non-commissioned officers and soldiers) and 3,496 horses. 2,300 of these men have died during the war. Most lost their lives due to cholera.

In the centre of the commemorative work there is a statue of a Piedmontese warrior woman, accompanied by a sailor and a bersagliere with a trumpet. Behind these three figures is the obelisk on a bronze cube decorated with oriental palms. At the base, on the Baveno granite, the coat of arms of the allied forces is displayed with the bas-reliefs of the siege of Sevastopol and the battle of Cernaia.
