The street was already present under the name of “rue de la Voûte-du-Cours” on the cadastral maps of the town of Saint-Mandé dating from the 1850s before the annexation of the territories by the city of Paris in 1860. It is extended beyond the avenue de Saint-Mandé (formerly "avenue du Bel-Air") by the opening in 1862 of a section which links it to the Cours de Vincennes (Formerly Avenue de Vincennes).  It then took the name of “rue Michel Bizot” in 1862, then “rue du Général Michel Bizot” in 1915, before becoming an avenue the following year.

In 1962, the part between Rue du Sahel and cours de Vincennes was renamed Docteur Arnold Netter avenue.
